Goodbye, Grandpa Mark

Jason's Dad passed away yesterday, Saturday, October 13th, surrounded by his loving family. The kids and I will be flying out on Tuesday for the funeral and then some family time. Thank you to everyone for the kind things you have said and done for me and for Jason. We love you!

Welcome, little Lincoln!

Last week, my brother, Andy and his wife, Kate had a BABY! Congratulations on the new little boy! I haven't been able to meet the little cutie yet, but they will be moving back to Utah very soon, and I am looking forward to spending some quality time...

Kokanee Salmon

We had a real adventure yesterday. We drove through the gorgeous fall foliage up to Porcupine Dam, East of Avon to see the Kokanee salmon running up the Little Bear River. It was truly one of the most amazing things I've ever witnessed in nature. We are a couple of weeks to late to see the really dramatic running of the salmon, where apparently the water is red, full of ready-to-spawn fish. But there were still many for us to see, and cheer for as they fought their way up the stream they were born. It was so sad to know they were in their final stage of life, and after spawning would die. It's the circle of life, as Elton John sings, but really, kind of harsh.

We hiked down the steep hillside, with lots of other families who had come to check out the sight, and found a deep spot where several fish waited, saving up energy to make a serious push up through the rocky, waterfall, whitewater stuff. We found ourselves cheering out loud for the fish who made it, and mourning for the ones who just got washed back downstream. Bennett wanted so badly to jump in and help them get up. Eventually he entertained himself by poking the dead fish with sticks, freeing them from the branches and debris they were caught in, and sending them back downstream.

On our way home, we stopped for another little hike. This one was muddier. There were all kinds of birds along the lower end of the creek, where it empties into the reservoir, feasting on the fish that had expended all their energy on their efforts swimming. It was fun to walk out across the muddy, empty dam to see a few fish return to the water. We saw a boy with a homemade spear chasing some down, which made me think, "Come on, give these guys a break!" Also, I can't believe as a responsible mother I did this, but I let Bennett and Owen run back and forth across the shallow water even though it was cold and there was snow on the mountains. I was thinking of times my parents let us play in the water various places, and knew they would love it and never forget it. Especially the part where Owen got stuck in the mud!

It was such a memorable day. The only thing missing: JASON. :(

Bold and trusty...

Yesterday was a great day. Hallee came to visit! It was so much fun to have her. Bennett has been asking when we get to go see Hallee ever since we started keeping up with their family via their blog. They got along great, and Hallee was a good sport as Bennett asked her what superhero she wanted to be, or what ninja she wanted to be.... She kind of smiled and said, "I don't really know about superheroes." (I understand, Hallee.) We eventually went out to the garden and picked mini-pumpkins to decorate, an activity everyone could love.

Last night after dinner we decided to go on an adventure. It was good for all of us to hike around on the Bonneville Shoreline Trail. The colors are beautiful everywhere right now, and every day is more lovely than the last. Bennett was a little disappointed that we didn't find any diamonds on our hike. Apparently, in a "science" book he saw recently, he saw people finding diamonds in the mountains. Unfortunately, those must not have been our mountains, because even after some intense digging with sharp rocks, all we found were red ants.

As it was getting dark, I told the boys I thought we should head for the car, and I did mention my fear of cougars. Bennett raised his fist in the air and said, "Let's keep going, because I'm bold and trusty!" I don't know where he got that phrase either, but it made us all laugh out loud.

Craft mania

Just thought I would share some of the projects I've been working on. First was a punchneedle design I came up with a while ago. I just mounted it the other day. Cute little Halloweeny thing. Then I made a quick but cute little blankie for somebody. I don't know who yet, but I had the fabric. I also made a reversible superhero cape for my little nephew, Zac, for Christmas. (Don't show him, Nikki and Alan!) I should really wait and not show pics of it now, but I just can't wait!

We have a great tradition in our family of drawing names for Christmas and making all the gifts by hand. I am always so amazed by the creative things everyone comes up with. It's so much fun, but it can be a leetle overwhelming if you leave the gift-making until, say, December 15. So I'm trying to get a head start this year. I have also started on Nikki's gift, but sorry, no photos yet!

First leaf pile of the season!

Fall is officially here, everyone!

My first pie...

I baked my first pie yesterday. Actually, I have baked pies in the past, but never, ever, have I made the crust. The process and the prospect of failing at making pie crust made me really nervous, actually, but it turned out okay. My friend Julie, a.k.a. Betty Crocker told me it looked like something from a magazine. (She is a very good friend, isn't she?) So I thought I'd share a photo of it with you. And Jason, I'm so sorry you were away when I made my first pie attempt.

Really, it was at Bennett's insistence that I made it. We just finished the 5th book in the Boxcar children mystery series, which has a lot to do with pie-making. (Now I know I've piqued your interest... you should check out the book or borrow it from me.) So as we were reading the final chapters of the book the night before last, Bennett started moaning about his need for apple pie. "Ohhhhh... I want some sooooo baaaaaad!!!!!!" So I promised him we would pick some apples from Clair's yard and bake a pie the next day. First thing in the morning, "Is it time to make pie yet?" were the first words he uttered. That continued ALL DAY until the pie was actually baked. After eating about 3 pieces, however, he told me, "I guess what I really wanted was just cooked apples. The crust is not my favorite." Oh well, it was my first attempt after all.

I should also say that I really did learn a good trick from the Boxcar kids. I rolled out the dough between 2 pieces of wax paper. Voila! No mess! And crust thickness perfection!

A message from Jason

Thanks to all for the thoughts and prayers. We're enjoying this time with my Dad. My six siblings are here in Bellingham and we've had some big family dinners with Dad at the head of the table.
